Chanting at the Entrance of Shree Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

12:31 pm December 7th 2024. Rishikesh, India. Our friend Rohit took us up here. We stopped at a Sadhu's hillside cave on the way up. We washed our feet and hands before introducing ourselves. He allowed us to sit in the cave for a few minutes. After we sat together and had cane sugar pudding before hiking the rest of the way up to the temple. We had to leave our shoes far on the outside of the temple grounds. There were many pilgrims crowding to enter the temple. As we got close to the entrance, in the midst of the crowd, I turned on the recorder.

Rome Late Night Mass

8:53 pm October 27th 2024. Rome, Italy. We landed here at 6pm. We decided to wander around instead of collapsing in the hostel. It is dark. We wander into one of the many churches and by chance there is a service in progress. I slip in and sit in the very back and take out my recorder.

A Pack Train on the Trail up to Mardi Himal

11:21 am Janaury 2nd 2025. The sun feels warm between the gusts of wind. I have already been walking four hours from where I started in Jhinu Danda this morning. I hear them before I see them. I step off the trail to let the train of mules pass. They each carry loads far heavier than mine: propane tanks, sacks of garlic, potatoes, construction materials. Their heads bob up and down as they march swinging their bells. Lagging far behind their driver.

Night in Saugerties

10:34 pm September 2nd 2025. Saugerties, NY. The night is cool. We came up two days ago to breathe in the Hudson air. We are staying in a small yurt deep in the woods just the two of us. After a long day of luxurious lounging, we drive off to a local gas station to get some snacks. I leave the recorder on the steps of the yurt. The night sings.
